The Life You Want Is Built on Ordinary Tuesdays

I heard a quote the other day that stopped me in my tracks:

“The life you want is built on ordinary Tuesdays.”

We spend so much of our lives looking forward to the big things. The vacation. The new house. The promotion. The birthday. The holiday. The milestone we’ve been working toward.

And those things are wonderful. I love having something exciting on the calendar as much as anyone.

But when you really think about it, those big moments make up such a small percentage of our lives.

Most of life happens on a Tuesday.

It’s the coffee you drink in the morning. It’s getting stronger during a workout you almost didn’t feel like doing. It’s walking the dog and noticing the weather is finally starting to change. It’s sitting around the dinner table talking about absolutely nothing important.

It’s hearing a song in the car that instantly takes you back to another time in your life. It’s laughing at something stupid with your kids. It’s your favorite show at the end of a long day. It’s climbing into a freshly made bed. It’s the routines we repeat so often that we barely notice them anymore.

That’s our life.

I think sometimes we get so focused on creating a big, beautiful life that we forget to make the ordinary parts of it beautiful too.

We tell ourselves we'll be happier when we take the trip, lose the weight, make more money, finish the project, buy the house, or finally reach whatever goal is currently sitting in front of us.

But there will always be another goal.

And there will always be another Tuesday.

Maybe living with more joy isn't about adding more exciting things to our lives. Maybe it's about getting better at noticing what's already good.

Drink the coffee while it's hot. Take the walk. Turn up the song. Enjoy the conversation. Notice the sunset. Laugh with your kids. Appreciate what your body can do. Make dinner something you look forward to. Create little routines that make an ordinary day feel good.

Because someday, when we look back, I don't think we'll only remember the vacations and milestones.

We'll remember pieces of ordinary life.

And maybe that's the whole point.

Don't wait for the big moments to give you a reason to love your life.

Build a life where even an ordinary Tuesday has something worth loving.
