My Mom, Mel Robbins, and a memory to cherish

There are so many things in life we tend to take for granted and one of the biggest, I think, is time with family.

As someone who hasn’t lived near family for the past 25 years, I definitely don’t take it for granted. A lot of people can grab lunch with their parents, go shopping, or have dinner together on a regular basis. That’s never been part of my adult life.

I grew up in Massachusetts, went to college in Kentucky, and never moved back. My brother went to school in Vermont, joined the Air Force, and now lives in Michigan with his family. My mom retired to North Carolina, and my dad is still in Massachusetts with our extended family. So, for me, seeing family has always meant planning, time off work, and travel.

A few months ago, Mel Robbins — yes, the Mel Robbins (and if you don’t know her, you should absolutely look her up!) came out with a new book, The Let Them Theory. It’s an incredible read, one of those books that sticks with you and shifts how you think. When I found out she was doing a book tour and one of the stops was in Boston, I had an idea:

Why not meet my mom there as a Mother’s Day’s gift, stay in the city, and go to the show together? We both love Mel Robbins, and it felt like the perfect gift.

With a busy mom schedule, I could only squeeze in less than 20 hours in the city (soccer tournaments wait for no one!), but honestly, it was completely worth it. We had dinner together, stayed overnight, and shared this amazing experience — just the two of us.

Mel Robbins has this incredible ability to make you believe you can do anything you set your mind to and more importantly, that it’s never too late to try. She’s relatable, down-to-earth, and her advice is packed with practical, real-life tools that actually work. If you don’t listen to her podcast (she usually releases two episodes a week), I can’t recommend it enough. I listen to them on my walks, and my mom and I often chat about the episodes afterward. And while all her books are fantastic, The Let Them Theory is hands down my favorite.

That quick trip reminded me how important it is to carve out time for the people we love. It doesn’t always have to be a trip, sometimes it’s a phone call, a coffee date, or a walk together, if you are close enough to do that. But those little moments? They matter.

I feel so grateful we were able to have that time together, and I know it’s a memory both my mom and I will cherish for years to come.
