The magic of Christmas lights and why I start celebrating early

Every year, the great debate begins, when is the “right” time to put up the Christmas tree? Some say not until after Thanksgiving, others hold off until December, and then there are those of us who just can’t wait.

For most of my adult life, I put the tree up the weekend before Thanksgiving. But in 2020, I needed the joy of the season early. That year changed everything. I put my tree up on November 1st and I’ve done it ever since.

What’s funny is how much people seem to care about when others decorate. I’m always amazed by how passionate people get about it. But honestly? I’ve realized that if something brings you joy, why not embrace it fully?

Because for me, there’s something about Christmas lights that lights me up inside. All week long, I’ve been jumping out of bed early just to sit with my coffee in the quiet, while it’s still dark outside, surrounded by the soft glow of the lights. It’s peaceful. It’s magical. It’s energizing.

The whole season fills me with happiness, the movies, the hot chocolate, the decorations, the giving, the shopping, and especially the music. Every morning, before I wake up the boys, I turn on Christmas music so they start their day surrounded by the spirit of the season.

There’s something powerful about leaning into what fills your heart. When something brings you so much joy, why not go all in?

So, whether you’re team “wait until after Thanksgiving” or team “November 1st is fair game,” I hope you give yourself permission to create joy, however and whenever you choose.

After all, the world could always use a little more light.
