Midlife Women: We Are Not Doing This Again

If you grew up in the 80s and 90s like I did, you know exactly what I’m about to say. Skinny was everything. We were told to eat as little as possible, do hours of cardio, and avoid lifting weights because we might “look like a man.” Every magazine, every celebrity, every model reinforced the same message, smaller was better, thinner was the goal. And whether we realized it or not, so many of us spent years chasing that.

Then things started to shift. We moved into a body positivity era where the focus became more about confidence, acceptance, and overall health. It felt like we were finally stepping away from the pressure to be as small as possible. But lately, I can’t help but notice that we are quickly starting to slide back. “Thin is in” again, and I’m going to say this as clearly as I can, we cannot do this again.

Midlife changes everything. What worked in your 20s does not work the same way after 40. Hormones shift, muscle mass naturally declines, and bone density starts to decrease. This is exactly why your focus needs to change too. The goal is no longer to be the smallest version of yourself. The goal is to be the strongest, healthiest version of yourself.

I’m going to say something that might make people uncomfortable, but it needs to be said. The rise of GLP-1 medications has amplified this shift back toward “skinny at all costs.” And to be clear, this is not about judging anyone who chooses to use them. That’s a personal decision. But what I am seeing over and over again is people losing 20, 30, even 40 pounds without actually changing their habits. They’re not strength training, they’re not prioritizing protein, and they’re not fueling their bodies, they’re simply eating less.

Yes, the scale is going down. But so is muscle. And we’ve all seen it, the sunken faces, the loss of muscle tone, the “thin but not strong” look. More importantly, we’re seeing the long-term health trade-offs that come with it.

Here’s the truth that doesn’t get talked about enough. When you lose weight without protecting your muscle, you are not just losing fat, you are losing muscle too. And muscle is everything as you age. It’s what supports your metabolism, protects your bones, stabilizes your joints, and allows you to stay strong and independent later in life.

This isn’t about aesthetics. This is about whether you can squat down and use the bathroom without assistance in your 70s and 80s. It’s about walking upstairs without struggling, tying your shoes, or catching yourself if you fall without breaking bones. This is about longevity and quality of life, not just what the scale says.

If you take away one thing from this, let it be this, strong is the goal. Not skinny. Not small. Not the lowest number on the scale. Strong. Because strong means you have muscle, you have resilience, and you are building a body that will support you for years to come.

And if you are using a GLP-1, again, no judgment but you need to be intentional. You need to prioritize protein, you need to lift weights, and you need to support your muscle. Because if you don’t, the weight you are losing is not just fat, and that will catch up with you.

We’ve already lived through an era that told us to shrink ourselves. We know where that leads. This time, we get to choose differently. We get to lift, fuel our bodies, build strength, and focus on long-term health.

This stage of life is not about getting smaller. It’s about building, building strength, building resilience, and building a body that allows you to live fully for decades to come.

So no, don’t get pulled back into “thin is in.”

Strong is in. Strong is powerful. Strong is freedom.

And that is what we’re chasing now.
